TU Bergakademie Freiberg is working on new battery
The scientists of TU Bergakademie Freiberg work under the "Lithium-initiative Freiberg" in the development of powerful lithium-ion batteries. Will be developed with partners from industry and the question of how the lithium needs to be covered is also part of the project. "With the lithium-initiative created at the TU Bergakademie a scientific Lithium-Competence Centre that helps Saxons into a leading location of the lithium technology," said Prof. Voigt, Professor of Inorganic Chemistry at the TU Bergakademie Freiberg and initiator of the lithium-initiative.
The partners Geokompetenz the center Freiberg eV, the Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources Hannover (BGR) and the Autonomous University in Potosi (Bolivia). Participating companies include the K-UTEC Salt Technologies AG and ERCOSPLAN. In the Materials Research at the TU Bergakademie Freiberg, the lithium-research has already been well established. After an assessment by Prof. Li Voigt will become a strategic energy resource. The raw material Lithium is available worldwide but only in low concentration and their collection is an enormous technical effort required. In the coming years there will be a rapid demand for the alloy. The demand is triggered by this particular electric vehicles and hybrid cars, where lithium-ion batteries are installed.
At present, lithium to 75 percent in the high mountains of South America won and dried out while the rest of solutions of salt lakes. The biggest supplier of Li-world countries are Argentina and Chile. In the Salar de Uyuni, Bolivia, however, the South African country the largest reserves are located but have not been drilled. Together with the Autonomous University of Potosi in a research project was started connected to the target as an effective method for the extraction of lithium salts to develop.
Single charging plug decided for electric cars
The auto companies and the electronics industry have agreed with charging for electric cars on a single standard. The standard connector to ensure that electric vehicles anywhere in Europe is not only fast but also reliable can be refueled at gas stations with new energy flow. According a report by the newspaper "Die Welt" could the companies agree on a Dreistufenl sung. It was agreed on 400 volts and up to 63 amps so that high load speed is reached. In houses, garages and service stations must be built according to this new lines. Compared to a normal domestic power line should not have the new plug to charge an empty battery in hours but minutes.
The company will present at the Hanover Fair the uniform charging and technical innovations to the visitors. Electric cars create hopefully with the adopted standard plug the breakthrough. However, before batteries need to be developed which allow a much greater range than the current models.
The prices for batteries and electric cars also have to fall more affordable. Who today would buy an electric vehicle like the Twike needs for investing at least 18,000 euros. The range of the Twike is a single charge at 200 km and allow for its efficient electric drive to lower energy consumption. Currently there are about 400 charging stations in Germany, and it will still take some years before there will be a nationwide gas stations network.
